NEW YORK STATE ARCHIVES

The New York State Archives was established in 1971 and opened its doors to the public in 1978. It cares for and provides access to more than 130 million documents that tell the story of New York from the seventeenth century to the present.

HISTORIC DOCUMENTS INVENTORY

Historical record repositories throughout the state collect and make available records of businesses, governments, religious, social and fraternal organizations, ethnic and other groups, and the papers of individuals and families who lived and worked in New York. There are over 2800 historical records repositories and over 4300 local governments in New York. Many of these repositories have contributed information on their holdings to the Historic Documents Inventory, the statewide section of the online catalog of the New York State Archives and State Library.

NEW YORK STATE LIBRARY

Since its establishment in 1818, the State Library has been a repository for the official publications of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, commissions, public authorities, and other agencies of the State government. Its research collections, which include over 20 million items, support State government work and the research needs of the general public, both on-site and via interlibrary loan.

MANUSCRIPTS AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

The Manuscripts and Special Collections unit was established within the State Library in 1881. Its responsibilities include the acquisition, access, and preservation of the Library's collections of archives and manuscripts, rare books, maps and atlases, prints and photographs, broadsides and posters, musical scores and ephemera. These collections document the history of New York State from the 17th century to the present and illustrate the history of many topics related to American history, literature, science and the arts.
