Hendrickie Hooghkerk was born in August 1693. She was the daughter of trader-turned-brickmaker Lucas Lucasse Hooghkerk and his second wife, the widow Judik Marselis. She grew up in a large family in Albany's first ward

In May 1716, she married the slightly younger blacksmith's son, Joseph Yates, Jr., at the Albany Dutch church. By 1736, the marriage had produced eight children who were christened in Albany.

This Yates family made their home in Albany's first ward where Joseph Yates, Jr. also practiced the blacksmith's trade.
