Rachel Van Zandt Hooghkerk

Rachel Van Zandt was born in February 1741. She was a middle daughter in the family of Gerrit and Anna Vandenbergh Van Zandt. She grew up in the comfortable home of a first ward merchant.

In October 1763, she married Isaac Hooghkerk at the Albany Dutch church. By 1778, four children had been christened in Albany. As late as September 1796, Rachel and her husband were named as baptism sponsors for a Van Zandt baby.

These Hooghkerks lived in the first ward where Isaac operated the family brickyard. In 1800, Rachel was in her fifties and their houshold was served by three slaves.

Isaac Hoogkerk died in September 1809. By that time, Rachel Van Zandt Hooghkerk probably had already passed on.
