General Research Interests

• Biology, ecology, and taxonomy of symbiotic organisms associated with aquatic invertebrates, particularly those of bivalves and insects.
• Role of such parasites in host population dynamics.
• Potential of parasites and microbial biotoxins as biological control agents.
• Fundamental and applied aspects of invertebrate pathology.
• Biology and ecology of aquatic invasive species.

Current Major Research Projects

• Development of the bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens as an environmentally-safe control agent for zebra mussels (Dreissena spp.).
• New species of Ophryoglena infecting Dreissena polymorpha.
• New species of Haplosporidium infecting Dreissena polymorpha.
• Dreissena stankovici: An endemic species present in Europe's most ancient lake, Lake Ohrid (Macedonia).
• Comparison of the endosymbiotic assemblage of European and North American zebra mussel populations.
