Volunteer Positions Announcement: Undergraduate Field Research Assistants for Saratoga County Blanding’s Turtle Study

Two undergraduates are needed to assist with graduate research, helping to collect information on the distribution, population structure, and habitat use of Blanding’s turtles in and near the Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park. Assistants will work together in the field and/or with researcher Andrea Chaloux for 12 weeks (May 19 – Aug. 8).

Duties: Check turtle traps daily; measure, weigh, mark, age, and sex turtles; radio-track turtles; conduct nighttime nesting surveys.

Hours and Salary: ~ 28 hours/week, unpaid.

Qualifications: Assistants must have their own vehicle and have a valid driver’s license. Assistants must also have successfully completed 1 undergraduate-level biology course, have a strong work ethic and interest in conservation, be willing to work in a variety of environmental conditions, and have strong field data collection and writing skills. Plant/animal identification and orienteering skills are strongly desired. Experience with telemetry and GPS units is a plus.
