NATURAL RESOURCES PROTECTION DEPARTMENT
POSITION TITLE: WILDLIFE TECHNICIAN
SALARY: $15/HOUR; NO BENEFITS
TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: TEMPORARY (6 months-1 year), PART-TIME (20-30 hrs/week)
LOCATION OF POSITION: NATURAL RESOURCES PROTECTION DEPARTMENT, MASHANTUCKET PEQUOT TRIBAL NATION, MASHANTUCKET, CONNECTICUT
STARTING DATE: MARCH/APRIL 2007
Duties: The technician will be responsible for field work and data entry on two projects. The first project will evaluate snapping turtle use of vernal pools as well as nest and hibernacula site characteristics used by snapping turtles in southeastern Connecticut. Field work consists of setting and checking traps daily; assisting with processing of captured animals; conducting telemetry on radio-tagged animals; measuring water quality and habitat characteristics of vernal pools used by snapping turtles; locating nest and hibernacula sites used by tagged turtles; and measuring habitat variables at nest and hibernacula sites. The second project will evaluate the use of wildlife culverts by herpetiles and small mammals. Field work consists of setting and checking a variety of traps and processing trapped animals.
Specialized Experience: 1) knowledge of methods and techniques related to field ecology 2) experience conducting radio-telemetry 3) experience handling a variety of animals, especially snapping turtles.
Certification/License Requirements: All applicants should possess a valid state driver’s license. A Bachelor of Science in wildlife biology, wildlife management, or related, is necessary.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift heavy equipment and walk/climb over uneven terrain and steep hills.
Other Requirements: Must be willing to work independently at night, weekends, and odd hours. Willing to work fluctuating hours each week.
