The New York Natural Heritage Program is accepting applications for the following two positions: State Parks Botanist and State Parks Ecologist.
New York boasts seven ecoregions and diverse state park land that includes Atlantic Ocean and Great Lakes barrier dune systems, thousands of acres of old-growth forests, meromictic lakes, calcareous cliffs, and pitch pine-scrub oak barrens. There are hundreds of species of rare plants in New York parks ranging from big shellbark hickory trees to tiny curlygrass ferns.
The NY Natural Heritage Program is a partnership between the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) and The Nature Conservancy. NY Natural Heritage staff are all employees of The Nature Conservancy who are based in the NYS DEC Division of Fish, Wildlife, and Marine Resources. The program currently has 24 employees comprised of botanists, ecologists, zoologists, information management and GIS specialists, and administrative staff. Program funding has grown to approximately $2.2M each year.
These two positions are within the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). The positions have applicability to the entire State Park System and is focused upon conducting inventories of newly acquired state park land, continuing follow-up work at facilities previously surveyed, conducting inventories in connection with Agency projects and initiatives, and providing input as needed on site-specific projects within the state park system, especially where rare plants and ecological communities tracked by NY Natural Heritage may be involved.
NY Natural Heritage has a strong focus on the application of our data to conservation, encourages innovation, supports travel to conferences, and actively builds partnerships within New York and beyond its borders. All staff have access to the most current technology, from hand-held computers and field form databases to GIS and the Biotics database. In recognition of its accomplishments, NY Natural Heritage was given the Outstanding Program award by The Nature Conservancy and NatureServe in 1997 and in 2003.
Albany, NY, along with nearby Troy and Schenectady, are small cities easily accessed from surrounding rural villages. Hiking and canoeing in the Adirondack and Catskill regions are an easy drive from the office, while the cultural opportunities of New York City, Boston and Montreal are 3-4 hours away by car and train.
