Aveteran of the Regular Army, James Meltz joined the New York National Guard in 2003 as a member of 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment. He deployed with the battalion to Iraq in 2004.
In 2008, Meltz served as a member of the 27th Brigade and Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix in Afghanistan. While serving with Delta Company, Meltz was awarded the Bronze Star for valor. During a Taliban ambush, Meltz rescued fellow soldiers from a burning humvee before returning to help organize the defense and counterattack by the rest of his company during the three-hour battle.
In 2009, First Sergeant Meltz was awarded the George Van Cleave Military Leadership award from the USO, which is presented to one member of each service annually.
In civilian life, Meltz is a member of the New York State Police Special Operations Response Team in Rensselaer County.
