Op Art Revisited: Selections from
the Albright-Knox Art Gallery

(May - August 2004)

For 10 years, the Great Art Series has brought masterworks from premier New York museums to Capital Region audiences.

The seed for the Bank of America Great Art Series was planted ten years ago, when the New York State Museum hosted Winslow Homer and His Contemporaries, an exhibition of American prints from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The interest this show generated among Capital Region corporate and arts leaders led the State Museum Institute to initiate a development campaign to fund future art exhibitions.

In November 1998, the Museum announced a generous grant from Fleet Bank (now Bank of America) and its plan for a world-class exhibition series formally titled the Great Art Exhibition and Education Program. Since then, 19 major exhibitions of fine art from New York State’s premier museums have brought more than 1,000 masterworks to the Capital Region. Some 1 million visitors have seen century- and culture-spanning works by Thomas Cole, Andy Warhol, Auguste Rodin, Henri Matisse, Romare Bearden, Vasily Kandinsky, Donald Judd, and Kara Walker, among many other outstanding artists.

Over the years guest curators have assembled powerful exhibitions especially for the Museum, seeking new directions while maintaining accessibility and relevance for new audiences. From Folk Art to Pop Art, Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism to New Realism, visitors have experienced the richness and depth of diverse museum collections.

Now approaching its second decade, the Bank of America Great Art Series continues to deliver expertly curated exhibitions drawn from cultural institutions across the state. In addition to the current selection of Latin and Caribbean Art from The Museum of Modern Art, the State Museum is partnering with SUNY Plattsburgh on an upcoming exhibition exploring the life and work of Rockwell Kent.
