Third Annual Researching New York Conference

The Conference will be held at the University at Albany - SUNY on November 16, 2001.

SUNYA imageThis annual conference provides a forum for the exploration of all aspects of New York State's rich and diverse history. The conference is sponsored by The Department of History and the History Graduate Student Organization, University at Albany, SUNY, the New York State Archives, and the Archives Partnership Trust. The program includes papers, panels, workshops, roundtables, and exhibits on many aspects of New York history.

ALCO: Schenectady Working on the Railroad

The Exhibit is open Tuesday-Friday 10:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday noon-5:00 p.m.Through November 25, 2001.

Alco imagePart of a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in Schenectady, this exhibit explores the history, technology, and community impact of a company whose Schenectady-built products were a symbol of power and industry around world. (Admission to this exhibit is free.)

The State Library's Civil War Workshop

The Workshop is on Thursday, November 8, 2001, from 10:45 am to 3:00 pm. The snow date is Thursday, November 15.

Civil War CampTo celebrate November is New York State History Month, the New York State Library will hold a workshop, Researching the Civil War: Resources at the New York State Library, the New York State Archives and the New York State Museum (and then some!) You can register on the day of the program but please call 518-474-2274 to leave your name and phone number so we will be sure to have enough hand-outs.

The Underground Railroad History Project Walking Tour

The Tour is on Sunday, November 4, 2001, at 2:00 pm.

Underground RR tourThe Underground Railroad History Project will conduct a 90 minute walking tour in downtown Albany, visiting locations where local Underground Railroad activists lived and worked. Stories are shared about fugitives, abolitionists, conditions of the mid-19th century time period, and the response to the institution of slavery known as the underground railroad. Adult fee is $7, and children through age 15 are free. Group tours and oral presentations are available by special arrangement.

Montgomery County Department of History & Archives

These programs run during the whole month of November.

VeteransThe Montgomery County Department of History & Archives will be exhibiting materials on two different topics for History Month. For the first 2 weeks, to commemorate the veterans of the U.S. and coincide with Veterans' Day, we will have an exhibit of items to represent as many of the wars in which the U.S. soldiers served. For the last 2 weeks of November, we will sponsor an exhibit of holiday traditions from many different people.

Celebration in Recognition of Alf Evers' Contributions to the Furthering of New York History

The program will take place Sunday, October 21, 2001 from 2:00 p.m - 4 p.m. (a pre-November History Month event)

Alf EversTo begin this year's History Month events, Ulster County Historian, Karlyn Elia, announces a Celebration in Recognition of Alf Evers' Contributions to the Furthering of New York History. This event will feature brief speeches by the friends of Alf Evers, and distinguished guests, a few songs by Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, and the premier of the documentary about Alf Evers produced by Nathan Koenig.

The program will take place at the Senate House Historic Site, Kingston, New York.

Schenectady County Historical Society Library

This event continues throughout November

Schenectady HistoricalDuring the month of November, the Schenectady County Historical Society Library is making an extra effort to make its historical document collections available and accessible to researchers and the general public.

November 30th
Tug C. W. "Bill" Spangenberger, the last president of the Cornell Steamboat Company and an important source of information for THOMAS CORNELL AND THE CORNELL STEAMBOAT COMPANY by Stuart Murray, will speak about Cornell, his company, and his boats.

The Hamburg Public Library

This event takes place November 1, 7:00 p.m.

The Capital District Civil War Round Table

This event takes place November 9-10.

The Capital District Civil War Round Table, of Albany, New York, holds its Fourth Annual Northeast Civil War Conference and Annual Fall Banquet on Friday and Saturday, November 9-10. The conference theme is "New York and the Civil War: The Capital Region and Upstate New York".

The conference will be held at the Best Western Hotel, Western Avenue, Albany.

The Rensselaer County Historical Society

This event takes place November 2-3.

Rensselaer County Historical The Rensselaer County Historical Society in Troy, New York is presenting its Fall 2001 symposium, Advancing Prosperity: Reexamining Life and Culture in Upstate New York, 1825-1861 on November 2 and 3 and will bring together curators, historians, students of history and material culture, and interested members of the public to focus on upstate New York during the first half of the nineteenth century.

The symposium will be held at the newly renovated Carr Building property of RCHS, Troy, New York.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS MONDAY, OCT. 22. Seating is limited. Please register early. CONFERENCE REGISTRATION FEE $50 ($45 RCHS memb/students) Friday, Nov. 2 Buffet Dinner is $25. Saturday, Nov. 3 Box Lunch available for $10.

The Orange County Genealogical Society

This event takes place November 10th.

The Newburgh Free Library

This event takes place November 17th.

survey chain<img src= A lecture entitled "Rods, Chains and Links: the Story of a Colonial Surveyor" will be offered at the Newburgh Free Library, 124 Grand St., on Sat., Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. The program, presented by Jim Clearwater, a professional surveyor who has played the role of a colonial surveyor at many local reenactments, will focus on the how-to's of survey plotting and early land deeds. He will discuss the equipment and methods used to accomplish each survey, some of the founding fathers who also surveyed the land, how knowledge of the land was power in the hands of Colonial leaders and the prominent role the colonial surveyor played in society. There will be no charge for admission.

Waldenbooks in Oneonta

This event takes place November 3rd.

turnpike WEST THROUGH THE CATSKILLS: THE STORY OF THE SUSQUEHANNA TURNPIKE, a new book by Dorothy Kubik, celebrates the 200th anniversary of one of New York States's first great roads to the West. It connected Catskill on the Hudson with Unadilla on the Susquehanna and was also called the Catskill Turnpike.

The author will be signing books at Waldenbooks in Oneonta on November 3, 2-4 PM.


Ogden Free Library

This event takes place November 10th.

The New York State Museum on the Web

This project runs all during November.

Batteau Discovery The New York State Museum has created a website that provides a virtual voyage along the waterways of New York on its full-scale replica Mohawk River batteau "Discovery". Trace this boat's educational journeys from 1991 through 1996 as it carries a living history program on early canals and navigation across the State.

The Burchfield-Penney Art Center

These programs take place all during November.

Indian art Exhibition: The Pan-American Exposition Centennial: Images of the American Indian investigates ways in which American Indians have been represented in art during the past century. On view October 13, 2001, through January 6, 2002.

Family Workshops: Saturday, November 10, 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. There are fees for workshops and registration is limited. Register for workshops by calling (716) 878-6020.
