Laboratory for Conservation and Evolutionary Genetics

The New York State Museum has a strong tradition, dating back to the mid-1800's, of research excellence in fields related to biodiversity, systematics, and evolution. Presently, the Museum continues its commitment to modern scientific study with its newest research facility, the Laboratory for Conservation and Evolutionary Genetics (LCEG). The LCEG is a multi-user molecular phylogenetics laboratory designed for use by Museum researchers interested in animal and plant evolution. This facility offers Museum researchers the technology to directly analyze genetic variability among organisms by DNA nucleotide sequencing. In addition, the LCEG houses the Museum's Genome Bank, a frozen tissue collection that compliments the traditional dried-specimen collections by preserving plant and animal DNA for future study.
