Rodents: Mammal Diversity Profile
Rodents are the most diverse group of mammals. Pocket mice and kangaroo rats from the American west offer excellent examples of how a group can evolve as a variation on a theme. They also provided a challenge to artist Elizabeth McClelland, who had to study the minute differences in color and shape of museum specimens and translate these into artwork that would help mammalogists tell the animals apart in the field.
