Northeast Natural History Conference X :: About NENHC

Overview

The Northeast Natural History Conference will be held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, NY on April 17–18, 2008. The conference is a forum for researchers to present current information on the varied aspects of natural history for the Northeastern United States and adjacent Canada. In addition to updating colleagues on current research, the Northeast Natural History Conference can serve as a forum to identify research needs, foster friendships, and rekindle interest in natural history by bringing people with diverse backgrounds together. The program includes a keynote speaker, organized symposium, contributed oral sessions, a poster session, an illustrator’s gallery, a book market and a banquet.

Attendance at the last conference in 2006 was over 600 people, with 151 oral presentations and 78 poster presentations. We expect this year's Northeast Natural History Conference to be an even bigger event.

Organized Symposium and Contributed Oral Sessions

Thursday and Friday, April 17 and 18, 2008

Symposia are organized around a common theme, which may have a defined focus—such as the biology of an individual species—or a broader focus—such as conservation or ecological research topics. Each symposia should have a minimum of five presenters and a maximum of around ten presenters.

A preliminary list of organized symposium topics is now available.

A number of sessions will also be organized from the contributed abstracts that are received.

Abstracts of all presentations are reviewed by the organizing committee and if accepted they are published in an Abstract Volume, which will also be made available on this web site.

Poster Session

Thursday and Friday, April 17 and 18, 2008

The poster session will take place Thursday afternoon at a time that will not conflict with any of the oral sessions. Contributed posters will be organized by topics. We will also host organized poster sessions, which would run concurrently with the contributed poster session.

Focus on Nature: Natural History Illustration Exhibit

Focus on Nature (FON) is a biennial exhibit of scientific, natural and cultural history illustration that began in 1990 in conjunction with the Northeast Natural History Conference. While the opening still coincides with the Natural History Conference, the exhibit has taken on a life of its own and each year the geographical representation, breadth of subject matter, and quality has increased to a level of high standard and international participation. Artworks considered for inclusion must accurately represent the subjects, or research results and processes.

Purchase prize money is awarded on the basis of high quality, scientific accuracy, and aesthetic achievement. Artwork that is awarded a purchase prize is accessioned into the permanent collection of the New York State Museum. This collection includes approximately 18,000 illustrations primarily created or museum publications, by such artists as Louis Agassiz Fuertes, George Barkentin, Ernest Thompson Seton, Mary Banning, and numerous excellent contemporary artists.
