New Insights in Mineralogy: Rossmanite and Elbaite (06.01.11)

The study of mineral specimens from the New York State Mineral collection has provided new insights into a unique occurrence in a Grenville-age marble from Newcomb, Essex County. Rossmanite and elbaite, two high-aluminum tourmaline species were found here. This locality is significant because: (a) it is the first occurrence of rossmanite and elbaite in New York; (b) it is the third occurrence of rossmanite in the USA; (c) both tourmaline species occur in marble and not in granitic pegmatites, their usual environment; and (d) this is a new occurrence of tourmaline with boron in tetrahedral coordination.
