Over the past 155 years, the New York State Geological Survey has accumulated several large collections of geologic materials. This material constitutes the Survey’s Open-File. The material consists of well logs, field maps, notes, unpublished reports of researchers and consultants, boring records, geophysical records and other written or drawn material pertaining to the geology of New York.

A master index was developed in order to allow easier access to this extensive collection. The index system uses 10 major categories: Bedrock Geology, Geophysical Data, Hydrologic Data, Engineering Geology, Oil & Gas, Non-Fuel Mineral Resources, and Miscellaneous. Within ht e major categories, 30 to 40 subcategories permit a unique Open-File number to be assigned to each item or set of items. These items can be searched for by Open-File number, title, author, type of study, and county. By far, the most useful and popular search method has been by county.
