Theresa Sandstone

THERESA SANDSTONE (GALWAY)
Gas production from the Upper Cambrian sandstones in western New York has long been referred to as the Theresa Sandstone Play although recent research suggests that the producing units are actually the interbedded sandstones and dolomites of the Galway Formation. These units blanket most of the central and western portion of the state, however the Knox Unconformity cuts down through the formation resulting in a thinning to the north. It is in regions where the upper sandstone member, known as the Rose Run, directly underlies the Knox Unconformity that the Galway is most productive.
