This workshop is organized by Siena College. A workshop site visit will be held at the New York State Museum.

This workshop invites K-12 teachers and librarians to explore the history of the Shakers. Participants will learn about the Shaker model of communalism and understand the Shaker version of gender equality in the context of changing ideas about the family and gender roles. Participants will also learn about art, architecture, and Shaker material culture. Common assumptions or myths about the Shakers will be discussed as well as the consequences, both positive and negative, of romanticizing the Shaker past. Scholars and experts in Shaker religion, history and material culture will provide talks. Participants will also meet with a social studies teacher who has established an educational partnership with contemporary Shakers at Sabbathday Lake, Maine.

Selected participants will receive a $1200 stipend from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
