Join us for a reception and tour of Tonalism: Pathway from the Hudson River School to Modern Art, a new exhibition that runs through June 14, 2020. Senior Curator of Art and Culture Karen Quinn will explain what Tonalism is and why this turn-of-the-twentieth-century style was all the rage and then fell out of favor.

Tonalism has long been considered a conservative approach to painting, but recent studies have begun to reconsider the style as innovative and having helped lay the groundwork for Modernism and contemporary art. This exhibition, organized in partnership with the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz, repositions Tonalism in this new context and features work by artists with ties to New York State.
