Description:
|
This publication features a multi-colored geologic map illustrating bedrock geology of the Fulton-Chain-of -Lakes region of the Adirondack State Park, New York. The 1:62,500 scale map measures 48 x 58 and encompasses an area approximately thirteen hundred square miles. It is a mosaic of six fifteen-minute quadrangle maps: Number Four, Big Moose, Raquette Lake, McKeever, Old Forge, and West Canada Lakes. It shows the rock types and structure of this geologically complex region. Rock units, designated by two or three letter symbols, are described in the explanation on the map and in more detail in the text. An illustrated text accompanying the map includes discussion of the origin and age of rocks and the influence of bedrock geology on landscape and lake acidification. Extensive geochemical data are presented. A suggested field trip, with detailed road log, is included as an appendix. The trip, beginning in Port Leyden on route 12 north of Utica and ending on route 30 north of Long Lake, illustrates the common rock types and some of the structural features of the map area. The map and report are the result of many years of fieldwork. It is a valuable educational and teaching tool and would interest, naturalists, hikers, campers, and boating and canoe enthusiasts as well.
