Chenago County museum plans Path Through History celebrations
NORWICH, N.Y. – The Chenango County Historical Society (CCHS) will be open special hours on June 16, with a variety of activities planned in celebration of Path Through History Weekend.
Shortly after the museum opens at 11 a.m., Poppy’s Mexican & American “On the Go” food fruck will arrive in the parking lot so that visitors can enjoy a picnic lunch in the Miller Pavilion on the CCHS campus.
Beginning at 1 p.m., the “Stitched In Time: The Creations of Beulah Hendrickson” exhibit will open. Featuring select pieces from the Beulah Ayers Barrett Hendrickson collection, this charming display is a highlight of folk art being curated to preserve Chenango County’s cultural heritage. While Hendrickson made a living at various times as a teacher, a farmer, and a country store owner, it was her unique ability to hand-craft distinctive dolls and figures that have ensured her legacy.
Immediately follow this exhibit opening, join the CCHS for an awards presentation when the Elinor Robb Troicke Memorial Scholarship will be presented to two graduating high school seniors from Chenango County: Kelsey Drewniak from Oxford Academy High School plans to study international relations and political science at SUNY New Paltz; Norwich High School’s Harrison Coggins is enrolling at Purdue University to pursue a degree in English writing and Russian Eurasian studies.
The exhibit opening of “Drawn to History: The Art of Danny McCarey” begins at 1:30 p.m. A self-taught artist, McCarey was known for his large murals, cartoons, and caricature drawings. The walls of the Norwich Grille hosted his artwork for many years, and his cartoons were published most frequently in The Evening Sun. Many of McCarey’s commissioned pieces are still held among local private collections. McCarey’s artwork is a chronicle of Chenango County history from a bygone era.
Special events are being held to highlight historically and culturally significant sites and offer new perspectives on New York state’s heritage during this year’s Path Through History Weekends. Scheduled to coincide with Father’s Day on June 15-16 and Columbus Day on Oct. 11-13, these events are ideal vacation and family opportunities.
CCHS summer hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Special hours for Sunday, June 16 are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to celebrate Path Through History Weekend. For more information, call (607) 334-9227 or visit www.Facebook.com/ChenangoHist
