Bottoms of front feet

Familiarity with the structures found on the bottoms of fisher feet helps greatly in being able to interpret the footprints found on track plates.  Note the crescent-shaped metacarpal pads found on the bottoms of their front feet. These are responsible for the part of the track we use to identify individual fishers.

Note the rows of wart-like structures and that the left and right pads are roughly mirror images of each other. This property aids us in distinguishing between footprints made by left and right feet. Prints made by the left foot are compared only with other  left -foot prints.

Note how the wart-like patterns differ between the front and rear pads and that fronts can be readily distinguished from rears. We will attempt to match only front prints, which appear much more commonly on track plates than rears.
