NEW YORK STATE BRYOPHYTES: STATUS REPORTS AND CHECKLISTS

Description: The biological diversity of New York has been incompletely explored and inventoried for all types of plants. Bryophytes, which are environmentally important in wetlands, mountain forests, and alpine vegetation, are less well known than other plant groups. This project consists of field and laboratory studies to ascertain the occurrence and verify distributions of the approximately 500 kinds of bryophytes thought to occur in New York State. This work is being done in conjunction with studies of museum and university collections, which contain specimens representing over 150 years of collecting. The data are used to document protection recommendations for certain plants under New York State Conservation Law. We are working with DEC Lands and Forests Division as our studies proceed, so that resource managers and policy makers have the best data available.
