FLORA OF NORTH AMERICADescription:The goal of this major international project is the preparation of a multi-volume set of books, accompanying CD-ROM disks, and Internet accessible data files that contain an authoritative, landmark summary of information about vascular plants and bryophytes of North America, north of Mexico, including Greenland. The project is centered at the Missouri Botanical Garden. I am one of the editors of the bryophyte volume and am preparing taxonomic treatments of nine genera (Aulacomnium, Calliergon, Calliergonella, Cyrtomnium, Odontoschisma, Pleurocladula, Pseudocalliergon, Sarmenthypnum, Scorpidium). The information provides a means to identify most of the terrestrial and aquatic vascular plants and bryophytes of North America, plus information about their distribution, importance, biology, and status. Flora of North America will serve as a standard reference for governmental agency work (including plant resource management), teaching, and tracking trends in the occurrence and composition of the North America flora, which is changing rapidly, owing to the accidental or purposeful introduction of alien species.
