GENERIC FLORA OF THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES (GFSEUS)

Principal Investigators:N. G. Miller (New York State Museum), Walter S. Judd (University of Florida), and Carroll E. Wood, Jr. (Harvard University)

Description:
This project seeks to establish sound taxonomic limits for genera of seed plants that occur in Southeastern States (North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana). Approximately 70% of the genera treated also pertain to the New York State flora and other parts of the Northeast. Started in 1955 at Harvard University, GFSEUS became a collaborative project with the New York State Museum in 1982. The University of Florida joined in 1994 as one of three principal collaborators. The research involves original observation, laboratory and herbarium studies, and extensive use of the published literature of botany. The printed papers now total 165 of a projected 198 installments. They have a wide readership—teachers, horticulturists, plant scientists, and members of governmental agencies and private organizations with a mission in botany—and the papers are frequently used to find pertinent literature about a particular plant group. The research leads to greater uniformity of the names applied to plants and provides easily accessible summaries of what is known about nearly all aspects of the plant resources of a large part of eastern North America, including biology, economic uses, status, and significance. Grants from the National Science Foundation have supported the project, and the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University has provided funds for publication. Installments since 1996 have appeared in the journal Harvard Papers in Botany.
