Wagon [Carrying Painting?]
October/November, 1864
Pencil on paper (4 x 6 in.)
NYSM 40.17.1793
The wagon appears to be transporting a large painting, an activity possibly relating to one
of the "Sanitary Fairs" held in several northern cities to raise money for the
U. S. Sanitary Commission, a precursor of
the Red Cross. These fairs exhibited artwork in addition to displays of technology and
handicraft. This painting closely resembles Frederic Church's
"The Heart of the Andes"
which was exhibited in at least one "Sanitary Fair" venue, New York City in March, 1864.

Brazil by the "USS Wachusett," the "Florida" sank off Newport News in a collision with the U. S.
transport "Alliance" while being towed into port.
