Under the name F. S. Winston and Co., Frederick S. Winston operated a prosperous drygoods business second in stature only to that of A. T. Stewart. At one time Winston was also president of the Mutual Life Insurance Co.

Jared Bradley Flagg was a member of a family of painters and was the nephew and biographer of the artist Washington Allston. In mid-life Flagg was an Episcopal priest for over a decade before resuming his career as a painter. His portrait of Winston is a posthumous work commissioned by Winston’s children.
