As a prosperous importer of dry goods, McCrea was among the first to import ingrain carpets from Scotland, the country of his birth. With headquarters in New York City, he had business interests and partners in several cities in the United States.

Waldo and Jewett were in partnership in New York City from 1817 until 1854. Their clients included prominent merchants and public figures from among the burgeoning urban middle class of the early nineteenth century.
