New York State County Historians

We are fortunate in this State to have a statewide network of officially appointed local government historians, part of whose job it is to assist people interested in searching for New York's past. Nearly every county, town and borough is represented by this network of over 1,600 local historians.

Almost every historical inquiry, every search for information, every attempt to connect in some way with New York's rich past, starts with a particular county. From that initial contact, it is possible to connect to the appointed town historians, if needed, or with other regional and local research resources that are well known to the county historians.

Currently the Association of Public Historians of New York State is maintaining a listing of county historians with links to municipal historians and other web-based information.
