Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)

The other main activity of the Bioarchaeology Lab is compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). NAGPRA requires federally-funded institutions to document and report holdings of Native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony and repatriate them to culturally affiliated, federally recognized tribes. Of approximately 1000 sets of Native American human remains that have been documented, over 350 have been repatriated to culturally affiliated groups. We also assist other institutions, museums, and historical societies with many aspects of NAGPRA compliance.
