Tour of the Collections
Mammals Revealed was an exhibition presented in 2005 about the scientific discovery of mammals and their artistic depiction in field guides. Identifying mammals is the first step toward understanding them; field guides help you do this by distilling mountains of information from libraries and museums, collected by generations of mammalogists, and funneling it into paintings, maps, and a few choice words. Here we show you a variety of the methods from the mammalogist’s toolbox, and illustrate how this science is transformed, through the artist’s eye, into a beautiful and useful field guide page.
