Ornithology Laboratory

Jeremy Kirchman
I am interested in historical questions concerning the biogeography and evolution birds. My research integrates the traditional fields of paleontology and genetics to understand patterns of bird diversification and extinction over the last few million years. On the extinction side, I study fossil bird bones from archaeological (cultural) and paleontological (non-cultural) sites. To study bird diversification I make use of DNA sequencing technology to compare genetic differences among populations and species of birds. To understand rates and patterns of evolution I combine data from these two fields using “ancient DNA” and molecular clock methods. Potential graduate students who share these interests are encouraged to email me to inquire about pursuing a masters or doctorate degree through the State University of New York at Albany.
