It was a "Gilded Age". New wealth suddenly widened the economic spectrum and the Adirondacks provided a poignant backdrop for its display. Stoddard recorded that change through the people he met with his camera. His writings and photographs imply an amazing ability to gather people together from diverse economic and cultural settings, from the very rich to the much less so, all wanting to share the Adirondacks and inspiring others to do so. This unique characteristic shows a dedicated intent to have his viewers explore the meaning of these contrasts, raising questions that we continue to ask.
