New York State Museum Geologist Chuck Ver Straeten will share some of his extensive knowledge about the rocks of the Catskill Mountains on this hike to the quarries in the Devil’s Kitchen area and on to Codfish Point. Most of the hike is along the trail toward Overlook Mountain, with stops at the quarry at Codfish Point and a possible bushwhack to a quarry on Plattekill Mountain. This is a moderate hike of 5 miles roundtrip and an elevation change of 1,000 feet.
The group will meet in the Kaaterskill Rail Trail parking lot at the Mountain Top Historical Society campus in Haines Falls, New York, at 10 a.m. to carpool to the Catskill Center property in Platte Clove.
