Loss of Homeplace: African American Owner-Operated Farms in the Capital Region - Dr. Michael Lucas

Dr. Michael Lucas, Curator of Historical Archaeology at the New York State Museum, shares his research on the Powell homestead. The homestead traces the journey of Thomas and Betty Powell, formerly enslaved individuals who purchased land in 1818 and built the largest African American-owned farm in the Albany area. Their descendants maintained ownership for 140 years, experiencing triumph, tragedy, success, and loss.
