State History

SYRACUSE, NY March 13th, 2019 - On Saturday, March 9th, 2019, students in grades 6th through 12th from across Central New York competed in the CNY Region History Day Competition, facilitated by the Onondaga Historical Association (OHA), at OCM BOCES in Syracuse, NY. 

Based on this year's theme, "Triumph & Tragedy," students presented their work in one of five ways: as a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website. Projects dove into interesting topics, including "Feminism in Third World Countries," "The Spanish Flue and WWI: Great Tragedies and their Contribution to Worldwide Triumphs," and "The Art of Drag: Ball Culture and Club Kids 1984-1996." The top-two winners in each division will now move on to New York State History Day on Monday, April 29th, 2019 at The Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, NY. From there, winners move on to National History Day in Washington, D.C. from June 9th through the 13th. 

A special award was given to Fayetteville-Manlius Senior High School's Laura Haight (pictured above with OHA Executive Director Gregg Tripoli) by Syracuse University for her excellent work on her paper, "Not Since Emancipation: The Tragedy of the Great Mississippi Floor and its Bystanders."

What is National History Day?

National History Day (NHD) is a learning adventure that teaches critical thinking, writing and research skills and boosts performance across all subjects – not just history. NHD focuses on historical research, interpretation and creative expression for 6th- to 12th-grade students. By participating in NHD, students become writers, filmmakers, web designers, playwrights and artists as they create unique contemporary expressions of history. The experience culminates in a series of contests at the local and affiliate levels and an annual national competition in the nation's capital in June.
