AAHA Black History Exhibit at the Rome Historical Society

This article originally appeared in a Rome Historical Society press release.
The Afro-American Heritage Association (AAHA) installed a temporary exhibit at Rome Historical Society (RHS) last month in honor of the 44th Annual Black History Month. The installation will remain on display for several months as a reminder to celebrate Black communities all year long.
Since 1978 the AAHA has served to provide a forum for the discussion and presentation of the history of African Americans in the Rome-Utica area and its neighboring communities. Through regular programs and exhibits they work to establish a permanent focus on the life and contributions of Black Americans in Oneida County. AAHA is looking for members and volunteers who are interested in participating and sustaining the work they do within the city of Rome. Call Willie Talmadge if you are interested in learning more 315-337-1215.
The exhibit was installed by RHS Trustee and AAHA President, Willie Talmadge and dedicated volunteers, Herbert Thorpe and Janet Bennett. Black physicians, athletes, Veterans, and women are represented in the exhibit with an emphasis on health and wellness. The exhibit features Janet’s “Man” which demonstrates her love of collage and passion for Black history and pride. Please visit RHS and the exhibit to appreciate the AAHA and their work to uplift Black stories in the museum.
