Myers' Underground Railroad site in Albany lands $2M state grant

A $2 million state grant will help launch the expansion of the Underground Railroad Education Center, Assemblymembers Patricia Fahy and John McDonald announced on Wednesday.

The Underground Railroad Education Center (UREC) currently lives in the former 19th-century home of Black abolitionists Harriet and Stephen Myers, a onetime stop on the Underground Railroad located in Arbor Hill. The $2 million state Capital Assistance grant will go toward building a new Interpretive Center in an empty lot next door to the Myers residence.

“These funds will assist in the construction of UREC’s planned Interpretive Center, continue to preserve this part of our area’s history, and help further explain its contemporary relevance to tourists, visitors, and residents alike,” Fahy said in a statement.  Read more...
