Ganondagan Hosts 16th Annual Native American Winter Games, Free to the Public
A variety of traditional indoor and outdoor activities make for a full day
Victor, NY—During the 17th-century when Ganondagan was an active Seneca town, winter was a busy time both indoors and out. OnSaturday, February 23 from 10 am - 4 pm, the public is invited to experience what winter life was like at Ganondagan’s Native American Winter Games through a variety of traditional Seneca activities. All activities are free and
include complimentary admission to the Seneca Art & Culture Center. Suggested donation is $10/family, $5/individual.
Outdoors, participants will learn how to play the competitive game of snowsnake, meet sled dogs and watch a dog sled demonstration,race small snowboats (akin to Pinewood Derby), and learn how to walk in snowshoes. Indoors at the Seneca Art & Culture Center, the Allegany River Dancers in colorful regalia will show their skill in Iroquois Social Dance demonstrations; Ganondagan staff will share winterstorytelling; visitors will have the chance to win raffles, visit the Wampum Learning Center, enjoy Iroquois White Corn-inspired food for purchase (11 am - 2:30 pm), and more.
“We believe that sharing our traditions through cultural programming and community events enriches the public’s understanding of Seneca and Hodinöhsö:ni’ values, culture, and contemporary life,” said Friends of Ganondagan Executive Director Meg Joseph. “We look forward to a full day of fun and educational activities at our Winter Games.”
