Historical Court Records Transfer to the State Archives Reveals Fascinating Details about Famous and Ordinary New Yorkers Alike

In early 2017, pre-1847 records of the Supreme Court and Chancery Court, held by the New York County Clerk's Office in Manhattan, were acquired by the State Archives by agreement with the Unified Court System. This consolidation in one location of about 5,000 cubic feet of important historical records will facilitate research access, both on-site and eventually, for selected records, online. The records are now stored in a secure, climate-controlled archival facility, helping to ensure their preservation for future researchers

One such document is the Supreme Court of Judicature roll of attorneys admitted 1754 - 1795. Though Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr became political opponents and personal enemies, they had parallel, similar careers. Both served as officers during the Revolutionary War. After the war both men held public offices in New York State government and in the new federal government established in 1789. Both were successful attorneys in New York City who represented plaintiffs in real property cases. The State Archives holds documents relating to their legal business in New York courts.
