“International Museum Day” marks return of Saturday hours at county museum

NORWICH, N.Y. – In celebration of International Museum Day (IMD), Saturday hours will resume at the Chenango County Historical Society & Museum on May 18. Coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), museums across the world will observe IMD in honor of this special occasion.
As defined by ICOM, a museum is a non-profit, permanent institution - open to the public - which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates, and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity, with the purpose of education, study, and enjoyment. IMD serves as a platform to raise public awareness on the role museums play in the development of society. Since its creation in 1977, IMD has gained increasing attention through 40,000 museums representing 158 participating countries.
“Thanks to our dedicated Board of Directors and other volunteers, we have the opportunity to increase weekly operations through the busy summer season,” Executive Director Jessica Moquin said. “It is most fitting that we celebrate ‘International Museum Day’ by resuming Saturday hours.”
Besides undergoing a complete redesign of the hallway lobby and main gallery spaces this spring, the Chenango County Historical Society & Museum is embarking on a new approach to highlight local culture that has global influence. This fall, other gallery spaces will be revamped for the new “Chenango County in Fifty Stories” exhibit, which will share stories that emphasize how the regional heritage extends beyond county borders.
The Chenango County Historical Society & Museum’s seasonal hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call (607) 334-9227 or visit www.Facebook.com/ChenangoHist.
