New-York Historical Society: A New Wing

New-York Historical is expanding. We want to tell you why.

In 1804, 11 prominent men founded the New-York Historical Society. Committed to preserving the evidence of their own historical moment, they established New York’s very first museum. They were innovators.

More than 200 years later, New-York Historical is led by a group of people that would have been inconceivable to those founders—diverse in gender, religion, color, creed, national origin, and more. Times have changed. The very meaning of the word "society" has shifted. Our nation has evolved, and New-York Historical has evolved along with it.

New-York Historical’s scope has broadened dramatically in recent years.

We are preparing now for another major innovation. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States’ founding, New-York Historical believes it is not enough to simply preserve the artifacts and documentation of our country. We must commit ourselves to playing a powerful role in preserving democracy itself.

To do that, New-York Historical will be expanding in every sense of the word with more ambitious education initiatives, extended national reach through our online platforms and digital programs, and a brand new 70,000-square-foot wing dedicated to inclusive history and democracy education.
