Rome Historical Society Awarded New Markers for Former Colonial Sites

The Rome Historical Society has been awarded with two new historic markers by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation to replace those that had long been broken and removed, officials at the historical society have announced.

The replacement markers are for the former colonial sites of Fort Williams and Fort Craven along East Whitesboro Street. An unveiling ceremony for the two markers will be held on Monday, Oct. 29, at 3 p.m. in front of 215 E. Whitesboro St. — near where the forts had been more than 262 years ago.

The society had entered into an agreement with the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee of Rome for the group to submit a grant application on its behalf, according to the announcement. Read more...
