When Washington Irving visited William Seward in the Autumn of 1838, it was only natural that the two gentlemen would make their way to the local bookstore, shopping to further fill the most cherished room of the Sewards’ house: the library. The collection amassed by the Seward family would grow to include over 5,000 titles, with topics that ranged from natural history and world travel, all the way to contemporary medical theories and popular fiction. These books shaped how the Sewards’ made sense of the social and political upheaval of the 19th century; the library proved both an escape from tumultuous times and a way to understand the world.
Join SHM Education and Outreach Coordinator Zach Finn on 4/23 at 12 PM as he discusses the Seward family library by looking at what books the family read, what reading meant to the family, how, beyond being a form of entertainment reading helped shape the Sewards’ place in American history, and why Seward once wrote: ““I Cannot Exist Without Books”.
